RESUME SUPPORT

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Resumes are often your first introduction to a prospective employer. As such, they’re a core part of your job search and come in many formats ranging from chronological to skills-based. The easiest way to build a resume is by leveraging a template. We have provided several templates to get you started. You may use our versions as-is or as a starting point to update your current resume. By providing a contemporary resume with skills and accomplishments that employers are looking for, you will be one step ahead of the competition… and on your way to making a great first impression.

TIPS FOR WRITING A RESUME

Dive into our content below for some helpful “Do’s and Don’ts” for a resume that stands out in a crowd. Keep in mind that writing a resume is not necessarily a one-time exercise – revisit, review, and customize for each outreach. It’s also imperative that you tailor your resume to each potential employer. And go into more detail in your cover letter – show that you have researched the company and how you fit the role.

DO'S

Do create a plan for your search. If looking for a career change should research the type of job and industry that you would like to work in.

Do research the organization to confirm you would like to be a part of it.

Do create and modify your resume to fit the job requirements. There is no one size fit all when applying for a range of positions with different qualifying needs.

Do post your resume on various search sites to increase your chances.

Do check your social media presence for improper displays, because employers do.

Do create a professional email address that won’t make employers blush.

Do highlight your achievements and valuable skills so that they easily attract the recruiter’s attention.

Do proofread your resume thoroughly to avoid misspellings and grammatical errors.

DON'TS

Don’t expect to get a new job overnight. It takes time and patience to get the results that you want.

Don’t solely rely on one method of job search. Use online job boards, referrals, networking, and volunteer.

Don’t treat a virtual interview any different than an in-person interview. Be on time, dress appropriately, and present yourself in a professional manner.

Don’t blow your job search by use of unprofessional or derogatory language or behavior.

Don’t wait for a company’s hiring decision. Some can take up to 2-3 weeks to choose. In the meantime, keep searching.

Don’t get over eager to contact the hiring manager repeatedly.  Limit yourself to 2 attempts per week.

Don't be rude if not selected, send a thank you note anyway. There may be other opportunities that you could be a great fit for.

Don't shy away from networking, or social events. Referrals are highly received by employers.

INTERVIEW PREPARATION AND ETIQUETTE

While a resume is typically how a company develops a first impression, the interview is designed for the potential employer to get to know you as a person and a professional. If you don’t get this job, but you have an impressive interview, you may be considered for other opportunities within the organization. Check out our content for ways to prepare to make an impactful impression, including professional thank you notes and timing for follow-ups.

PRE-HIRE REQUIREMENTS

If you are successful, your potential new boss will make an offer contingent on completion of pre-hire screenings that may include background checks, drug tests, and more. Each company differs in its requirements. Read below to learn what to expect when you receive an employment offer.

TARGETING, IDENTIFYING, AND APPLYING TO JOBS

A job search can be as simple as a few quick internet searches followed by application submissions, or it can be as complicated as performing in-depth research into the company background, the culture, and the role. It all depends on your situation, your experience, and your career aspirations. There are several ways you can expand your search or even bring the search to you! Check out our content below to help you purposefully target, identify, and apply for jobs.
